FOSSIL

Birregurra Commission

This bespoke piece of sculpture was commissioned to greet visitors as they enter a magnificent, newly built residence in country Victoria. The aspect captures the views across the lake and adjacent Bluestone wool sheds that skirt the estate. In an attempt to envelop the piece within its stunning setting, a concept was developed that suspended the sculpture from the ceiling and within the landscape, framed by the oversize window opening. This called for added steel reinforcement in the ceiling and some thoughtful engineering to float this 400kg monolith, delicately within the space and view.

The images below give a glimpse of the process involved to bring this vision to life. Numerous concepts were drawn and then modelled in limestone at scale before a final shape was chosen. I’m thankful for the client’s consistent trust and support and I’m honoured to have FOSSIL not only in such a wonderful home, but built into its very bones. The stone it was carved from was formed over millions of years under Australia’s southern seas and now hangs unearthed to watch over this beautiful and timeless landscape.
