Canberra Commission

This piece was commissioned to greet guests as they enter the front gate of a newly built residence in Canberra. The modern house is comprised of a series of crisp, stacked rectangular volumes presenting boldly to the street. After discussions with the client it became clear we wanted to contrast the strong linear form of the house with something flowing and feminine in essence. Working with images of the still unfinished building, I was able to superimpose sketches of the intended form and help envisage the scale and orientation of the finished piece. A scale model was developed and agreed upon before embarking on the challenging 1.6m tall sculpture.

The images below show the shear scale of the initial block and the long journey to uncover the entwined, flowing lines of the finished form. I worked with the clients construction team remotely to build the concrete plinth and design the complex transport and installation process. As always, it is a privilege to enter into the lives of the clients who choose to embark on this journey of creation. I feel the sculpture in the end reflects the open and nurturing nature of the family I came to know, and now stands as a testament to their warmth and vision at the entrance of their wonderful home.
